SIDEWALK PARKING

  • ENDANGERS PEDESTRIANS
  • DESTROYS SIDEWALKS
  • IS ILLEGAL

If this had been a ticket, you would have been fined at least $20. Consider this an educational warning from Manayunk Neighborhood Council. Violations will be reported to the 5th District Police Station beginning in March of 1999.

BEWARE THE IDES OF MARCH

Manayunk Neighborhood Council is taking action to halt the parking of cars on sidewalks. Violations will be reported to the 5th District Police Station beginning in March of 1999.

It is dangerous to force pedestrians from the sidewalks to the streets. The safety of our residents is more important than your need to save a few steps.

  • Own one car per household and share it with housemates.
  • Replace your car with a small motorcycle or scooter.
  • Take public transportation.
  • Carpool.
  • Bicycle.
  • Walk.
  • Work and shop locally.

WHAT THE CAR GIVES, THE CAR TAKES AWAY

The automobile has made a great difference to the neighborhood shopping scene. The car has made people more mobile and able to shop away from their communities. This has meant less demand for the formerly "essential" shops. At one time there were many grocery shops, butchers, general stores, tailors, clothing shops, hardware stores and pharmacies located in Manayunk.

In their place have come different commercial enterprises: restaurants, nightclubs, galleries, antique and specialty shops which largely cater to visitors. What the car gives, the car takes away.

There are still a few corner stores in Manayunk but the bulk of their sales are in candy and cigarettes. Complaints abound about the state of these stores but they are supplying the demand. If we want a convenient source of goods, we must support our local shops.

Over-reliance on the automobile has resulted in a variety of negative effects on society and the environment. Walking, biking, and public transportation should be a more significant part of our transportation system. Automobiles, and particularly single-occupant vehicles, should be relegated the mode of last resort.

The auto dependent lifestyle of the suburbs is not suitable in our compact community. The historic urban charm of Manayunk that lured so many of us here will be lost if we allow cars to overwhelm our neighborhood.
